The shade within. Al-Andalus

View from the National and University Library of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Sarajevo under siege, 1993. Completed 97 years before, the library was built in the Moorish Revival style, which took inspiration from visions of long vanished Al-Andalus, and enjoyed a long fin de siècle moment. Synagogue architects of the time especially favored the style for its evocation of the long gone, much lamented Golden Age of Sefarad.

Sarajevo seen from the library, January, 1993. As the central repository holding the primary documents of Bosnian history--Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Yugoslav--Serbian Nationalists ringing the city targeted the library with artillery. Braving the flames, librarians and their fellow Sarajevans were able to rescue just 10% of the collection. The building has since been restored, though it is no longer a library.
